curated by Zerynthia OdV

Opening  Thursday 10th May 2018
Ex Biblioteca Universitaria, Piazza Università 21, Sassari (IT)

It happens in Sardinia, the marvellous island.

What’s going on? The spaces of the former library of the old University of Sassari – long since empty of their books that have migrated to a new building – are filled with contemporary art.
Ceramics, textiles, bronze, glass and water, small objects, neon and laser, site-specific interventions… and obviously tons of paper, tons of words and different languages. Then there’s photographers, poets and filmmakers making their contributions.
An exhibition in which each of the 54 artists of the international scene(16 nations and 4 generations) is given a set of shelves, from A to X, like in any respectable library.
The exhibition, curated by Zerynthia, is accompanied by a programme of interdisciplinary workshops and seminars coordinated by Decamaster / University of Sassari.

NOW Workshop Walls of silence during
Together in silence / Insieme in silenzio

Silence is radical. From mute words to the silence of children, from spiritual places to silence in the form of peace, silence is like nature and like ambience.

Silence in reality does not exist, it is us who isolate ourselves to find silence within; art and sound too are silence. (Paolo Coteni)

The Paliano Town Council presents INSIEME IN SILENZIO (TOGETHER IN SILENCE) curated by Zerynthia, Voluntary Contemporary Art Association, the 2nd edition of an education project that this year sees the involvement of the Fine Art Academies of L’Aquila, Brera, Rome, the Istituto Europeo di Design of Rome (IED) and two foreign institutes, Villa Arson of Nice and the École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy.

The students selected by the institutes participate in a three-day workshop run Paolo Coteni, one of the first tutors to teach sound art in Italy. A course of sound research in order to create a collective work: a sound portrait of the city of Paliano.

The event will be accompanied by a series of sound art and video pieces located in various parts of the city: the Colonna  Chapel in Contrada Cervinara, the hall of the ex Pretura, the Wine Museum–Municipal Winery, the Paliano City Hall (that will function as a workshop for the selected students), the Choir and the Library of the Monastery of Santa Maria di Pugliano.

There will be sound and video works by: Arturas Bumsteinas, Francesco Fonassi, Liliana Moro, Fabio Perletta, Dmitry Prigov, Donatella Spaziani, Vladimir Tarasov, Antonio Trimani, Fosco Valentini with the poet Francesco Serrao and tracks by the Ensemble Georgika.

Exhibited in the town centre will be the bright moon (My Private Moon) by Leonid Tishkov.

The elementary schools of Paliano will be take part in a workshop curated by NOW New Operation Wave. The children will be the protagonists of a group performance in the streets of Paliano creating a true “walls of silence”.

On Saturday 18thNovemberat 15.30 in the hall of the ex Pretura del Comune there will be a round table on the theme of silence, curated and moderated by Riccardo Giagni, musicologist and composer. Taking part will be experts on the subject from the visual, literary and musical spheres: Marina Beer, Federico Capitoni, Cecilia Casorati, Paolo Coteni, Giuseppe Di Giugno. “Maybe only silence really exists” (José Saramago).

The event will be broadcast on RAM LIVE

NOW – New Operation Wave is proud to be partner of Dancity Festival 2017 edition held in Foligno from 30/6/2017 to 2/7/2017.

NOW will propose a series of sound actions in the historic center of Foligno, inspired by the Dancity / Art Session program. Following the different topics proposed, you will hear a distorted echo reverberating in the city, a sound reflection that finds other times and other spaces parallel to the festival.

Cafés, squares, corners, benches, lanes … Turn your ears on!

A temporary RAM radioartemobile station run by Luca Vitiello during Dancity days will broadcast locally and remotely the material of the actions and will collect interviews, extracts from lectures and field recordings from the Festival.

(F. Levini in Montesilvano Oggi / Now 2015 – 2016, Di Paolo Edizioni, 2017)

PENINSULA is a group of artists, designers, curators and art critics largely Italian, who have settled in Berlin during the past decade.
The aim is to provide an area of expression for architects, writers, musicians and all those with an interest in contemporary culture. Peninsula takes its cue from the concept of ‘Third Culture’ as a ‘Third Space.’ It is an idea of culture constantly reconstituting and rewriting itself beyond geopolitical boundaries.
An open territory in which communities of intentions and ideas are shared, in dedication to Jean-Luc Nancy’s Being Singular Plural as metaphor of a social and intercultural encounter and exchange that takes its momentum from the shared experience of Berlin by Peninsula’s members.

Berlin provides the perfect setting to create this Third Space. It is a city rich in social and cultural exchange, where different nationalities and identities co-exist. This space is not separate from the world. It is not an island, but a peninsula. We see ourselves as an outcrop, a space within a space, still attached to the mainland, but able to stretch towards new horizons. We have the freedom to invent and imagine, and build fluid links between other cultures.

At the beginning of the new millennium, the concept of artists and scholars as nomads between art and science and nations, has even greater relevance and application. At the forefront of this, is Peninsula.

Paths of study between art and territory

Saturday 15th October 2016
Paliano (Roma, Italy)

The Paliano Town Council presents INSIEME (TOGETHER), curated by Zerynthia, an innovative educational project involving the Fine Art Academies of L’Aquila, Frosinone, Roma and Urbino for the development of a venture linked to the area of the Municipality.

Last July, the tutors of the participating Academies selected a few students, chosen for their study paths concentrating on the relationship between art and territory.

After two visits to get to know the town and territory of Paliano, the group of participants will be accommodated by the Council for a residency of three days during which they will be able to prepare and put together their projects, all of which strictly site-specific.

On Saturday 15th October 2016 at 15.00 in the Tapestry Room of the Palazzo Colonna a D/A/C(Shared Artistic Denomination) meeting will be held entitled: L’arte contemporanea per la valorizzazione del territorio (Contemporary Art for the valorisation of the territory), involving the participation of artists and curators alongside businessmen and administrators both public and private from the Frosinone Province. This meeting will be included in the programme of D/A/C – which considers artistic creativity a catalyst for productive processes and human relations – following the meeting on 30th September 2016 at the Antonio Ratti Foundation in Como.

The meeting will be broadcast on RAM LIVE and subsequently on theD/A/C website

At 17.00 there will be the presentation of the INSIEME (TOGETHER) project with the exhibition of the works created for the project, set up around the historical centre of Paliano and in exhibitive spaces made available by the Town Council itself.

Frammenti di storia all’ascolto (Fragments of History to Listen to): in conjunction with this event, a selection of sound art works from the RAM radioartemobile archive will be installed in the Paliano Correctional Facility for the inmates. Guided tours will be available at the following times: Saturday 15th October from 16.30 to 19.00, Sunday 16th October from 10.00 to 13.00.

INSIEME (TOGETHER) is in line with Zerynthia’s previous educational activity at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan throughout 2015, in collaboration with the Paris HEC (École des Hautes Etudes Commerciales) and in participation with the training courses at the IUAV University of Venice, the University of Udine and the Venice Academy of Fine Arts.

The exhibition will be open until 23rd October.

La Montagne de Venise

28 September – 1 October 2016

Venice – Arsenal, Punta della Dogana, San Marco Basin, Biennale Gardens, Giudecca, Zattere, Fondamenta Nove

curated by Chiara Bertola and Giuliano Sergio

project realized in collaboration with the Querini Stampalia Foundation, the IUAV University and Fine Arts Academy of Venice

promoted and coordinated by Zerynthia Contemporary Art Association

Supported by the Municipality of Venice

with the support of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory, the Dena Foundation, EuroprogressGroup, Livio Felluga, the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, the Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation, the Antonio Ratti Foundation, Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana, Re-Cycle Italy, the University of Udine, Wake Forest – University of Venice Campus

We all know how cities are. They can, eventually, become different. Y.F.

La Montagne de Venise is the third stage of an architectural itinerary by Yona Friedman with Jean-Baptiste Decavèle in Italy, after the Vigne Museum for the Livio Felluga company in Friuli and No Man’s Land – belonging to everybody – in Loreto Aprutino.

Venice will host an architectural action realized in one of the Arsenal’s hangars, made from a mobile, transformable chestnut wood structure seven metres in height mounted upon a floating jetty reaching from the 28th to the 30th of September various points of the lagoon: Arsenale, Giardini della Biennale, Punta della Dogana, Bacino di San Marco, Zattere, Giudecca, Fondamenta Nove.

The project will be presented by Yona Friedman with Jean-Baptiste Decavèle at the auditorium of the Querini Stampalia Foundation on September 27th at 6 pm.

“Why not build a mountain in Venice?”: the proposal by Yona Friedman brings together irony and the knowledge that only a participatory architectural action can respond the Venetian dynamics. Building a mountain means changing the landscape, modifying the vision one has of a place, and enables a new point of view of what surrounds us.

On 1st October, for the closing evening, the Montagne de Venise will take on a new form inside the Arsenal. Art, music and theatre performances will accompany the event.

Venice has always had a style of its own, a style which is unique in Europe and which has influenced the Orient. The Mountain is part of an attempt to create a style which is lacking in present day architecture. It is part of a small series which has already been realized (in other parts of the world). I do not know where this will lead but it is worth trying. I believe it could be an opening. Y.F

NOW will document the entire event via sound, video recordings and interviews.

(L.A. Blanqui)

Curated by Anna Cestelli Guidi
in collaboration with RAM radioartemobile

Eleventh event of the One Space / One Sound project

(L.A. Blanqui): this is the title chosen for the visual and sound exhibition project by Felice Leviniwhich opens at the Parco della Musica Auditorium on Tuesday the 12th of July, at 7 pm.

The exhibition will be taking place in two stages in the two exhibit spaces. In the first, ‘daytime’ hall, megaphones will be playing a mix of music pieces, sounds, speeches and poetry, creating an interplay of circularity and chaos. This is the hall of the great chessboard, of politics and strategy, of history and its end – of Western collapse, of the last scream, of the heroic act for an unavoidable end, of a babel of democracies…

The next space is the ‘night’ hall – a realm not of darkness but of shadows, its reflection – like the light from a dead star. Everything has already been said and written: the real spur in art lies not in innovation but in reliving the same things – nature, humanity – from other angles, other perspectives. The essence of things lies in the problems posed, not their solutions. Time is punctuated by natural events: the seasons, the months of the year, the movement of the planets, the gifts of the gods, and the mercy of the saints – as though it were impossible to accept the world without the mediation of human hands.

Site-specific Installation by Yona Friedman
and Jean-Baptiste Decavèle

Contrada Rotacesta – Loreto Aprutino (Pescara)

During several months NOW has actively participated to the realization of  No Man’s Land and was glad to be present at its activation on May 14th, 2016 .

The project was born from the effective collaboration between the artists, ARIA, Cecilia Casorati, the foundation artistic director, Zerynthia Association and Mario Pieroni, who donated the ground on which the installation has been constructed.

The installation is the largest ever made by Friedman: extending over two hectares of countryside, it is a tapestry made out of a huge amount of white river stones, a bamboo structure that recalls Friedman’s museum without walls and an imaginary dictionary carved by the artists into more than 200 walnut trees.
